Dogging it in Encino

THEY SHOULD HAVE named The Stand, a new hot dog and sausage cafe in Encino, The Grand Stand.

That's because the lowly hot dog has never before been purveyed in such glorious surroundings.

One of the owners was a founding partner of The Grill, a posh steak and chop house in Beverly Hills. And if you're familiar with that particular interior, you'll notice the resemblance in the design and decor of The Stand.

But it's still fast food, whatever way you look at it, and The Stand has you standing in line at a counter, ordering and paying up before you either carry your wares to the table yourself or get them delivered by a server after you've found seats inside or outside.

The outside, by the way, is a nifty, hedge-lined patio...

Dining: The Stand Grows Up

Feb. 9 issue - In California, diners still love the all-American hot dog. But now they want it with a side of Sinatra and a glass of Silver Oak Cabernet. The lowly food stand is catering to a more grown-up palate, at least on the Left Coast. At Encino's The Stand (818-788-2700), employees in chef's whites serve up classic dogs, fresh fruit cobbler and wine by the glass. Patrons dine alfresco beneath strands of dimly lit backyard lights.

Industry vet Shapiro takes 'Stand,' teaches old dog new tricks

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 12)- Teaching the old-fashioned hot dog a few new tricks, partners Richard Shapiro, Jonathan Smiga and Murray Wishengrad opened a fast-casual concept, The Stand, here as the initial link in a planned sausage-specialty chain.
